Public Affairs & Policy Communications
Too many organizations see lobbying and public communications as separate functions, leaning on public policy recommendations to government that aren’t always buttressed by an external strategic communications approach that builds the broader case for those recommendations. It’s no longer enough (if it ever was) to attempt to influence government actions in the back rooms. A public affairs and government relations plan must mesh with the organization’s external branding and messaging. Making the case with the public helps make the case with decision makers. Clay’s long experience working on both the political and public service sides of government, as well as with organizations seeking innovations to public policy position him well to advise executives and boards on a comprehensive approach.
Strategic Communications Planning
A truly effective strategic communications plan should never be considered “final.” As organizations navigate often rapidly changing environments, they need to be both nimble and grounded in a strategy that’s organic and can shift to meet new challenges. There’s no real template for a strategic communications plan—organizations are unique and their strategy needs to be based on their respective goals over the short, medium and longterm. Working with executives, boards and communications people from a wide variety of organizations has given Clay the experience and tools to help your organization take a fresh look at strategic planning.
Crisis Communications & Issues Management
Years of organizational and executive work to build trust and credibility can be undone in an instant if the corporate response to an emerging issue isn’t effective and meaningful. The days of “spinning” your way out of a crisis have long since passed, but sometimes a combination of group-think and an insular approach result in the very public shredding of reputations. To be effective, crisis communications has to be about more than emergency news conferences or a sudden flurry of social media posts. Clay’s hands-on experience and solid track record of managing emerging, complex issues, as well as successfully navigating organizations through significant crises make him an ideal adviser to executives, boards and corporate communications leaders.
Media relations training and coaching
Media training isn’t just about running executives or spokespeople through mock news conferences or on-camera interviews. Scenario-based role playing is important preparation, obviously, and “refresher courses” are important for even the most experienced leaders. A spokesperson can look and sound polished in an interview, but if media opportunities aren’t built on a strong foundation of message development they aren’t likely to have lasting impact. Clay approaches media training from the ground up, working with leaders and organizations to test their assumptions and ensure their media approach matches their overall plans and has buy-in throughout the organization. Whether it’s coaching an emerging leader for their first media exposure, helping an experienced spokesperson to improve their techniques, or working with corporate boards to ensure top-level strategic messaging integration, Clay’s extensive media relations experience can help your organization succeed.
Speechwriting and speech training
Clay has written speeches for Premiers, Cabinet Ministers, Opposition Leaders, CEOs, election candidates, senior government officials and labour leaders, among others. Crafting a speech that captures the individuality and voice of the speaker and engages the audience takes more than cutting and pasting bullet points from a news release or comms plan. Whether it’s a keynote address at a major event, or speaking points for a news conference, Clay can help your organization’s leaders more effectively deliver your message.
Organizational communications audit
Has your organization’s communications functions stalled? Wondering why media and/or stakeholders aren’t “picking up what you’re putting down” any longer? Sometimes there’s a quick fix, but often there’s a need for a comprehensive communications audit that looks at how an organization is communicating externally and internally. For an organization to accomplish its strategic goals, the communications “engine” needs to be firing on all cylinders, and Clay has conducted communications audits for several organizations that gave them the information they needed to make significant improvements in their performance. An organizational communications audit can be focused directly on senior levels of leadership, or it can be from the ground up, harnessing the knowledge and enthusiasm at all levels of the organization.
